Connecting for Impact #6

Connecting for Impact #6

Trinity morning 6-25-06

Introduction: Two guys go to a baseball game. When they get there the one says to the other, “How did you get these great seats?” He answers, “I’ve got connections.”

My sister is visiting my Dad and Mom and gets on there compute to check her email. She makes the statement, “Man you have a slow internet connection.”

If you happen to hear a hum in the speakers it may be a result of a bad connection.

Someone may look at you and your spouse and say, “Those two are connected like super glue.”

Transition: Review of what the series has been over.

Today’s focus: “Our connection to others flows from our connection to God.

Illustration: David Livingston looking for the source of the Nile. The source of our connection to others is our connection to God.

Look at our theme verses in Matthew 22:37-40

Transition: The approach we are going to take is to look at the context of this passage and then make some applications concerning the Law and Love.

I.                   Law and Love:

1.      Background of Jesus dealings with the religious groups.

2.      Jesus does not abolish or throw away the law. But rather fulfills it.

3.      And in Christ we find that salvation is a free gift that we receive by grace through faith.

4.      However, after we are saved there is a transformation process that begins to take place.

5.      This is seen in how we act, what we do, how we behave.

6.      We call this ethics. Specifically Christian ethics. (show chart on behavior)

7.      It is the law that reveals to us how we should behave. (example of speed limit) Difference between judicial law and religious law.

8.      Jesus says that the whole law, and the prophets are summed up in these two commands.

Transition: Our love for others flows from our love for God. Since this is true, how should I live? What should I do? Since our connection to others is a direct result of how we connect to God, what then should be our response? (OPEN AIR TIME)

Conclusion: Do as we are told. Matthew 28:19-20. The way we live should be smothered with trying to connect others to Jesus. In coming to grips with this commission we begin to find our purpose in being on this earth. We begin to come to grips with why I am where I am!  Loving our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus Himself said is John 14:15, if you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Our mission our focus for life should be to love God and love others. Hopefully through this series we have seen how to do that.
