WHAT'S IN A NAME?       		 Pastor Bob Chroninger

	What is Your name?  Do you know what it means?  Most of our names probably carry little 
significance.. except the pleasure of our parents. But in the ancient East names were meaningful... Jacob, 
on his first night out, called the place "Bethel", the house of God.  When Rachel gave birth.. she called 
the baby "Benoni".. the son of my sorrow.. and she died.  But Jacob called the baby "Benjamin", the son 
of my right hand. 
	Can we really know a person without knowing his or her name?  God's names reveal His character 
and His relationship with His creatures.  Let's get to know God better by knowing His Names.... 
I.  THERE ARE THREE PRIMARY NAMES..  God, LORD, and Lord... 
  A. God..  (in Hebrew..  El, Elah, or Elohim)  Gen.1:1... etc. 
    1. El  = strength or strong one.. thought of faithfulness 
    2. Elohim  = plural noun with a singular meaning.. Gen.1:26; 3:22 
  B. LORD (GOD)... (Jehovah is the English form..)  (LORD God) 
    1. Jehovah is the self existent One who reveals Himself.. Ex.6:3,4 
    2. Jehovah is the covenant keeping and redemptive name.. 
	- It is Jehovah God who seeks out Adam & Eve...  Gen.3:9 
  C. Lord.. (Adon or Adonai)  Gen.15:2  = master.. 
    1. It is applied to both God and men... 
    2. It is with small "lord" when applied to men.. Gen.23:6 etc. 
	- Or to a husband.. Gen.18:12
 ** Christ is Both our "Husband to be" & "Master"... 2Cor.11:2,3; Jn.13:13 
II.  THERE ARE THREE NAMES COMPOUNDED WITH "God" 
  A. "El Elyon" = most high God.. Gen.14:17-24.. possessor of heaven & earth, 19 
	most often in reference to Gentiles 
    1. Moses' song.. Deut.32:8  Most high God divided to the nations... 
    2. Nebuchadnezzar referred to Daniel's God as the "most high God" Dan.3:26 
    3. Satan's sin was wanting to be like the "most high God"  Is.14:13,14
 ** But Unto Jesus Is Given ALL POWER IN HEAVEN AND EARTH..  Mt.28:18 
  B. "El Olam" = the everlasting God.. Gen.1:23 
    1. "El Olam" expresses eternal duration... Psalms 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or 
	ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God
    2. "El Olam"  expresses God's control over each successive age.. forever! 
  C. "El Shaddai"  = the Almighty God..  Gen.17:1.. to Abraham at 99 
    1. The Almighty God is the nourisher, strength giver & satisfier who pours Himself into believing lives! 
    2. The Almighty God also makes fruitful... as He did for Abraham   Heb.11:12  (as good as dead...)
    3. The Almighty God also "chastens" His own.. the El Shaddai allowed the best man of his day, Job, to 
	be purified for greater fruitfulness! 
III.  THERE ARE THREE NAMES COMPOUNDED WITH LORD (GOD) 
  A. LORD God = Jehovah Elohim 
    1. Used first of God's relation to men... 
	- As his Creator..  Gen.2:7-15 
	- As his Master..  Gen.2:16-17 
	- As his Redeemer.. Gen.3:8-15,21 
    2. Used of God's relation to Israel.. 
	- When Abraham instructed his servant about a wife for Isaac.. Gen.24:7 
	- When Moses was commissioned by God..  Ex.3:15 
	- When God instructed Israel about living in the Promised Land.. Deut.12:7 
  B. Lord LORD (GOD) = Adonai Jehovah  = "master" 
    1. Used in several verses by men addressing, or speaking to God. Gen.15:2,8; Deut.3:24; 9:26; Josh.7:7 
	- It owns Jehovah as Master of our lives! 
  C. LORD of Hosts  = Jehovah Sabaoth  =  Jehovah of Hosts 
    1. It is used in special reference to warfare and service 
    2. It is used mostly in the times of Israel's need..  Josh.5:13,14 
    3. It is used of "heavenly hosts",  angels...  Gen.32:1,2 
    4. It is used by Jeremiah about 80 times... Israel was approaching national judgment!
    5. It is used to reveal the heavenly power that is available for the needs of God's people! 

WOW.. WHAT A MIGHTY GOD IS HE! 
    DO YOU KNOW HIS NAME?  (Psalm 91:14) 
        THEN YOU CAN "KNOW" HIM IN A PERSONAL WAY!
